One in 8 British drinkers admitted they had passed on an unwanted bottle of vodka to unsuspecting friends, family and neighbours.
The details come from a nationwide study by premium tonic and mixer specialist, Franklin & Sons.
Despite its reputation as a drinks cabinet staple and the heart of cocktails and mixed drinks alike, 12.3per cent of adults admit to re-gifting vodka ahead instead of enjoying the gift themselves as part of a premium mixed drink.
The second most re-gifted tipples were Whisky and cream liqueurs (each 11.8per cent) – well ahead of Sherry (9.7per cent), Rum (9.9per cent) and Port (9.3per cent).
Now Franklin & Sons has created the CRAFT approach: Choose a spirit, find the Right glassware, Add plenty of ice, Find the perfect garnish and add the Tonic to suit the style.
The study of 2,000 households – commissioned to uncover the UK’s Christmas drinking habits – also found that the least given away spirit or liqueur was Cognac (8.5per cent).
And in a surprise result, more than 1 in 10 Brits said they had found a new home for a bottle of gin (10.9per cent), despite the UK’s well-documented, rekindled love affair with the juniper-laced liquid.
The research also uncovered the fact that good quality, premium mixers such as Franklin & Sons are breathing new life into favourite drinks from yesteryear.
Indeed, it seems that many of us will be reviving classic Christmas drinks from years gone by, with 13.8per cent and 12.8per cent of us planning to revamp Brandy and Sherry with a premium tonic or mixer respectively.
“Our findings show that the rise and rise of premium quality tonics and mixers is continuing, with Brits using their rekindled love for a G&T to rediscover forgotten favourites such as Brandy and Sherry with tonic ” said Jen Draper, the head of marketing at Franklin & Sons.
“However, the opportunity lies not only in reviving these hidden gems, so we are making it our calling to convince the fortunate recipients of all drinks and liqueurs, be it a Gin, Brandy or Sherry, to mix and enjoy them rather than re-gifting or leaving them in the cupboard for a special occasion, as after all Franklin & Sons is crafted to keep us in the best of spirits – especially at Christmas.”
